Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Mayo qualifications internationally recognised?
Yes, the Mayo school was one of the first and is one of the most highly acclaimed astrology schools in the world. The Mayo was also the first school to offer online learning in the UK in 2011.
How long does it take to complete the course?
It takes one year for the certificate and two years for the diploma. Extensions may be given under certain circumstances, but this is at the discretion of the school and may incur an additional administration fee.
When can I start the course?
For offline/distance learning you can start at any time. For Certificate or Fast-Track Online students there are two courses that run per year, October to May and then again in the summer from July – September. Diploma Online students can start at the next Diploma Unit (for which there are three held a year).
What happens when I enrol?
For the offline courses, you will be sent your course materials within two working days by PDF. You would be allocated a tutor to whom you would communicate with and send your reports to. For online courses, you would start at the next entry date (Certificate – October or July and the Diploma – Units start in February, April and October).
Are there any exams?
No, all course work is by reports and project work.
English is not my first language, is this a problem?
No, the Mayo School is proud to have students and graduates from all over the world. Tutors and staff are aware that students may not be proficient in fluent English and ensure that this is taken into consideration in all reports, the final projects as well as interaction in the webinars.
How many reports are there for each course?
There are 18 for the Certificate Course, 12 for the Advanced Certificate course and 36 for the Diploma course. The reports are short (no more than 500 words) and are designed to assess your progress and ensure you are meeting your learning outcomes. There is also a final project for each course.
How are my reports graded?
Your reports are not graded but assessed by your tutor and to ensure you are on track and advise if and where improvement is needed.
How long do I have to complete my final project?
Students have six months to complete their final project.
How long is the final project?
The final project is 8000 words long and is a natal analysis of a chart. Students also have the option to complete a Social and Global Astrology (Mundane) project of a similar length if they wish to graduate in both Mundane and Natal Astrology.
Can I graduate in Mundane Astrology?
Yes, you can choose to do either a Mundane final project where you would graduate in Mundane only or you can do both the Natal and Mundane final projects where you would graduate in both.
Can I get extensions on my course, reports and final project?
Yes, but you need to tell us in advance. We understand life gets in the way at times and we can support students by extending or suspending studies where necessary, but this is done at the discretionary of tutors and on a case by case basis. Course extensions for offline learning may incur a fee.
What is the difference between the Certificate Course and the Fast-Track Certificate Course?
They are exactly the same except those enrolling for the Fast-track Certificate Course will have some knowledge of the planets, signs and houses and will bypass the first term of the Certificate Course and start at term two. The Fast-track Certificate Course is ideal for students who have some basic knowledge already and want to complete the Certificate Course as either a refresher or to fast-track to the Diploma Course.
Can I attend the webinars and opt out of completing the reports and final project?
Yes, you can just attend the webinars. To graduate in the courses and be certified however, you will need to complete the reports and final project.
Do I need to travel or come to the UK to do any courses?
No, all coursework is conducted in your own home and you are not required to travel at all.
Do I have my own tutor?
Yes, you will be assigned a tutor upon registration who will guide you and mark your papers throughout the course.
Do I need to buy any books or additional resources?
No, the course materials the Mayo provide include the resources you will need to complete the course. You are provided with substantial reading materials and recorded webinars. However, we do encourage students to broaden their knowledge and a comprehensive recommended reading list is also provided.
What is the exchange rate for the course fees?
As there are so many currencies which can change daily, we are unable to provide this information. However, we do recommend the site http://www.xe.com/ for up to date information.
Can I pay in instalments?
The course fees are designed to break up the costs of each of the course and students can pay term by term or Unit by Unit.
What sort of work can I go into after completing my studies?
There are various types of work and the main one would be to set up as an astrology consultant. However, many astrologers pursue the line of work in teaching, researching, media work or using astrology alongside other disciplines.
What is the difference between mundane and natal astrology?
Mundane astrology looks at the societal and global phenomena such as economics, politics and global events. Natal astrology is personal astrology and explores the psychology of individuals.
Do the courses involve any mathematics or chart calculation?
Due to high demand, the calculation section has now been removed from both the Certificate and Diploma courses. However, the Mayo is happy to provide all learning resources to students who wish to study this.
Can I register for the Diploma Course without doing the Certificate?
Students can enrol for the diploma but would need to be proficient skills in basic chart interpretation. Ideally students will hold the Mayo certificate or another qualification from a recognised school.
Do I need astrological software to complete any of the Mayo courses?
No, this is not necessary. All information and links to relevant websites are provided and we recommend Astro.com for any chart calculations students wish to use for personal use.
